April Is National Facial Protection, Oral Cancer Awareness Month

April is a very important month for the dental health community, as it marks both National Facial Protection Month and Oral Cancer Awareness Month.

Our team at Southwest Oral Surgery has proudly served the oral health needs of our community since 1991 with our experienced oral surgeons in Glendale, Arizona.

We are here to provide you with the highest level of care possible, all while creating a positive and comfortable environment during your treatment.

Prevention

Prevention should always be your goal when it comes to your oral health. National Facial Protection Month promotes wearing protective gear during sports and other activities that can put your face at risk of injury.

Mouthguards, helmets, and face shields are all types of protective gear that can help prevent serious injuries to your face, teeth and mouth. But remember, when accidents happen, our team is ready to help!

Oral Injury

According to the American Dental Association (ADA), more than 5 million teeth are knocked out each year due to sports injuries. By promoting the use of protective gear, National Facial Protection Month aims to reduce the number of sports-related dental injuries and keep your mouth and face safe and healthy.

But should you find yourself with a knocked out tooth or other facial injury, our team is ready to help you restore your mouth and face. Our oral surgeons have the treatments, skills and experience to fully restore your smile to look and feel your best again.

Oral Cancer Awareness Month

April is also Oral Cancer Awareness Month, which is aimed at protecting people from this serious disease that can impact anyone, regardless of age or gender. The good news is that oral cancer is highly treatable if detected early.

This is why it is so important to be aware of the risk factors of oral cancer like smoking, excessive alcohol consumption and exposure to the human papillomavirus (HPV). Symptoms of oral cancer may include persistent mouth sores, difficulty swallowing, and a lump or thickening in the mouth.

If you have persistent symptoms or significant changes in your mouth, it may be time to visit one of our experienced oral surgeons. Our surgeons provide lesion biopsy and pathology in Glendale, AZ to diagnose your condition after your general dentist refers you to us.
