Why A Tooth Needs to Be Extracted

We try to save your natural teeth whenever possible. However, there are times when removing a tooth is necessary for your overall health.

  • Severe Decay: If a cavity has damaged too much of the tooth structure, a filling or crown might not be enough to fix it
  • Gum Disease: Advanced gum disease can loosen teeth and damage the bone that supports them
  • Impacted Wisdom Teeth: These teeth often get stuck in the jaw and can cause pain or infection if they are not removed
  • Overcrowding: Sometimes, we need to remove a tooth to create space so your orthodontist can straighten your smile
  • Trauma: A bad fall or accident can fracture a tooth in a way that cannot be repaired

The Tooth Extraction Process

We want you to feel prepared and calm on the day of your appointment. Here is what you can expect when you visit us.

  • Initial Consultation: We will take X-rays and discuss your medical history. You will receive clear instructions on how to prepare, such as when to stop eating if you are having sedation.
  • The Procedure: Your surgeon will gently numb the area, so you do not feel sharp pain. If the tooth is visible, we simply loosen it and lift it out. For teeth that are under the gums, we may need to make a small opening to remove it safely.
  • Pain Management: Your comfort is our priority. We offer sedation options to help you relax, and we will numb the area completely. After the procedure, we will provide a plan to manage any soreness as you heal.

After The Procedure

Taking care of yourself after surgery is key to a smooth recovery. We will give you detailed instructions, but here are the basics to help you heal.

  • Immediate Aftercare: You can bite down on a gauze pad to help a blood clot form. This clot is nature’s bandage, so it is important to keep it in place. Apply an ice pack to your cheek to reduce swelling.
  • Recovery Tips: Rest is important for the first 24 hours. Stick to soft foods like yogurt or applesauce and stay hydrated, but do not use a straw, as the suction can disturb the healing site.
  • Oral Hygiene: Keep your mouth clean by brushing gently, avoiding the extraction site. After a day, you can rinse softly with warm salt water to soothe your gums.

Common Questions

We know you want to make informed choices about your health. Here are answers to some questions we hear often.

The cost depends on how complex the extraction is and your specific insurance coverage. A simple removal costs less than a surgical one. We believe in transparency, so we will provide a clear cost breakdown and discuss payment options before we begin.

We do everything we can to minimize discomfort. You will be numbed during the procedure, so you should only feel pressure, not pain. Afterward, most patients manage any discomfort with over-the-counter medication and ice packs.

For most simple extractions, you should feel better within a few days. The gum tissue usually heals in about one to two weeks. If you had a surgical extraction, it might take a little longer. We will follow up with you to make sure you are healing well.
